June 2025

Canva’s engineering blog says it expects backend, machine learning and frontend candidates to use AI tools such as Copilot, Cursor and Claude in its technical interviews. It was one of the first companies to say so publicly, in June 2025. Candidates who have taken the round describe it as testing whether you use AI effectively rather than accept its output uncritically.

April 2025

Canva’s AI interview, about a year before this April 2026 comment, was about coding with AI effectively. Rather than prompting and accepting the output, the candidate interrogated and double-checked it, treating the AI like a junior engineer in a pair. They wrote REQUIREMENTS.md and TESTING.md spec files and kept updating them during the interview, which the interviewer was fine with.
